Welcome to my Website!

This is a complete guide on how to install steam, so you can start playing NeoTokyo on your linux machine.

For newbies

Wine is software that is used to run Windows applications in a Linux enviroment. We will need this to run Steam and NeoTokyo.

I already assume since you have successfully installed linux that you know how to google search or install wine through a terminal. But in a case that you are a mac user, just click this link for a guide.

For Debian and debian-based distros (Ubuntu) you can simply install the latest stable version with a command sudo apt install wine.

Now that I got that out of my system, lets actually do something now.

First step (wine configuration)

First of all, we have to edit the default wine configuration. You can open it through a terminal with winecfg, or by using the built-in search of your operating system (winecfg).

After opening it you should see this window. Set the windows version to Windows XP.

You will have to go to the Libraries tab. Type in "dwrite.dll" and click add in the "New override for library" section. (image)

Now there should be dwrite (native, builtin) in the existing_overrides. You will have to click edit and mark Disable. After pressing OK, now it should say dwrite (disabled).

You will also need to do the same process for the "gameoverlayrenderer.dll" (which will disable the steam game overlay because it can cause crashes). After this you are officially done with messing with the wine configuration!

Second step (steam installation)

Next step is to install steam. We have to download the windows version of a steamsetup.

If you can't run the .exe file by double clicking on it (instead it opens an archive manager or something) you will either have to run it through a terminal ("wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/Steam.exe" should be the default on linux), or right click it, find the "open it with other application", and find wine there and run it. Don't forget to check the "make it default" if you have that option and even better, if you have the use custom command option do this immediately.

Now is the usual steam installation window to which we all are used to. Choose your language, directory, accept the terms of agreement and install it. You should run the damn thing and it will download all updates you need if you have internet connection. After it is done updating, register/log in. After you logged in, click on steam then exit.

In the steam folder, there should be another folder named "config". Inside it, find config.vdf and open it. Something like this will await you. You will have to paste this line underneath the curly bracket "{". Copy it all, don't delete anything.

So that it looks like this.

Save and quit. For people who run wine through a terminal, you will have to run it like this if you want to access the steam store.

Now you are free to download NeoTokyo and play it. Best of luck, see you ingame o/ .

P.S

Here is a list of all problems you will experience:

That should be the end of it. If you have any questions or additional issues please contact me at discord (Kanana#0296) or with e-mail "nsf@national.shitposting.agency".

This guide is valid as long as steam supports the windows xp steam version. As of time of this writing there are 145 days until that happends. I will see then what to do next.

Did anyone notice that most issues I had is alt-tab related?
